At the end of November, Apple finally responded to complaints about some iPhone 6s smartphones unexpectedly shutting down. The problem was traced to a faulty battery that affected “a very small number of iPhone 6 devices” that were manufactured in the fall of 2015. Apple launched a free battery replacement program for the affected iPhones at the end of November, but required customers to bring their iPhones into an Apple Store to determine if they were eligible for the free battery.

That’s a bit of a problem. Not everyone lives near an Apple Store and not everyone has the time to spend waiting at the Genius Bar for their iPhone to be checked.

Depending on the phone it could be possible, unless a one time programmable chip is used to store it, changing the IMEI would mean changing that chip, and since that's usually baked on the phones motherboard, it requires you to change that completely then. Now Apple has made it easier, with online verification. Here’s what you need to do to find out if your iPhone 6s can get a free battery replacement.

1. Have your iPhone’s serial number ready. Of course most of us don’t have that info handy. To find it, go to Settings on your iPhone, navigate to General and About. The serial number is listed and you can even copy it for easier entry.
2. Go to Apple’s iPhone 6s Program for Unexpected Shutdown website and enter that serial number, then Submit.

You’ll get a message telling you whether your iPhone is eligible or not --or in my case, a message warning the serial number entered is not valid.

If Apple determines your iPhone 6s is one of the affected units, you still have to make an appointment at the Genius Bar, but you get a free replacement battery out of it.

If not, at least you didn’t have to spend your lunch hour waiting in line to find out.
