For some, it's just one round of cartoonish splatter after another. To movie ghouls and lovers of morbid invention, it's the horror franchise to die for.

Yes we've reached the final, final, final, final, final destination, the fifth dreadfully entertaining barrage of fiendishly devised demises, gore and gallows humour.
This year's doomed generation is a bunch of office types on a team bonding trip from an industrial plant. Sadly the team does the exact opposite of bond when Sam (Heroes star D'Agosto) has a premonition that the bridge they're parked on is about to collapse. And whaddya know..?
But instead of being skewered, tarred, mashed, bisected and/or drowned, the seven people who got off the bus with Sam - including his boss (comedy veteran Koechner), his ex (Bell, TV's The Walking Dead), and his best friend (Tom Cruise-alike Fisher) - live to see another day. Maybe even two.
Death, you see, has a plan. Spoil it, and he'll soon come up with another one. Generally more unpleasant. Certainly more elaborate.
So while the office tramp is made to wear a shiny, new bonnet that really doesn't suit her, the sleazy guy finds eternal peace through Buddha, a union rep gets hooked up in a pay dispute, and a gymnast finds herself completely screwed.
This last set-piece is director Steven Quale's best, a superbly executed exercise in sports hall suspense. Shame he doesn't take as much time to build up to each subsequent nasty surprise. Life's obviously too short.
Still, Quale ensures every pay-off ends with a satisfying 'eeeuw' while writer Eric Heisserer (rebooter of The Thing) shows plenty of malice aforethought in tying up the loose ends and bringing the series full circle.
He even gives the tried-and-trusted template an interesting tweak by making the survivors believe they can cheat death by putting someone else in harm's way.

Does it work? Well, it's certainly of interest to Courtney B Vance's suspicious FBI agent. However, like most events in FD world, just when you think you can see what's coming, there's always something unexpected to throw a spanner in the works. Like a teddy bear.. or a spanner.
Upholding franchise traditions in amusingly grisly style, the Reaper's latest round-up is definitely up to snuff.
